Khao Phansa Festival
Monks' retreat.
The festival of candles, Khao Phansa follows hot upon the heels of the Asalaha Puja festival, and celebrates the start of the three month retreat a period when the buddhists monks retire into the temples to dedicate themselves to study and meditation.
Traditionally, the festival Kaho Phansa marks the moment chosen by numerous families for their sons to enter the monastery.
In the city, the processions involve sculpted candles which can measure several metres in height.
