Erawan Shrine

Buddhism in daily life.
The Erawan Shrine was built in 1956 after the real events. At the time, workers on a hotel building site were dying and other disasters occurring. Rumour had it that these misfortunes occurred because building had begun on an unfavourable date. It was decided that a temple would be built to ward off the bad luck. The tragedies stopped happening. The place then became a sacred place where believers come to pray. History repeated itself in 2006 when a maniac attacked the statue of Buddha with a hammer. Believers who were present at the time beat him to death. This temple is proof of how linked daily life and religion are in Thailand.
